Point Lookout Lighthouse

The Point Lookout Lighthouse was constructed in 1830 and has been guiding mariners through the Chesapeake Bay ever since.

Its strategic location at the southernmost tip of Maryland's western shore made it an essential aid to navigation.

Architecture

The lighthouse stands at a height of 65 feet (20 meters) above the surrounding terrain, with a total structure height of 80 feet (24 meters).

The focal height, or the distance from the base of the tower to the top of the optic, is approximately 120 feet (37 meters) above sea level.

The lighthouse's distinctive octagonal shape and red-and-white striped pattern make it easily recognizable.

Light Characteristics

The Point Lookout Lighthouse features a first-order Fresnel lens that produces a characteristic three-flash sequence every two minutes.

This pattern can be seen from a distance of up to 20 nautical miles (37 kilometers).

Current Status

As of May 2025, the lighthouse is open to the public as a museum during the summer months.

Visitors can explore the tower and learn about its rich history.
