History
The lighthouse was constructed in 1884 by the Canadian Department of Marine and Fisheries.
It has been an important aid to navigation for mariners traversing the coast of Nova Scotia.
Architecture
The tower stands at a height of approximately 30 metres (98 feet) above sea level.
The focal height, or the height of the light above the surrounding terrain, is around 50 metres (164 feet).
The lighthouse is constructed from cast iron and features a distinctive octagonal shape with a central lantern room.
Light Characteristics
The Black Rock Point Light emits a fixed red light that can be seen up to 20 nautical miles (37 kilometres) away.
The light's pattern is a steady, all-night burn.
Current Status
The lighthouse remains an active aid to navigation, although it has been automated since its construction.
It is no longer in use as a primary navigational aid, but still serves as a reference point for mariners.
Heritage Status
The Black Rock Point Light is listed on the Register of Historic Places under the Canadian Heritage Agency.
