The Farol is a historic lighthouse located on the island of Sal Rei in Cape Verde.

History

  • The construction of the Farol began in 1911, and it was completed in 1912. The tower has been an important aid to navigation for mariners passing through the area.

Architecture

The Farol's tower stands at a height of 28 meters (92 feet) above sea level, with a focal height of 45 meters (148 feet). The lighthouse is characterized by its distinctive white and red striped pattern, which can be seen from a distance. The light source emits two beams: one white with a period of 20 seconds and an angle of sector start 220 degrees and sector end 355 degrees, and another red with the same characteristics.

Light Characteristics

The Farol's light is visible for a range of 11 nautical miles (20 km). The light has been automated since its installation in 1912.

Current Status

The Farol is no longer an active aid to navigation. It has been preserved as a historic monument and is now a museum, open to the public for guided tours.
