East Watchtower Lighthouse

The East Watchtower Lighthouse, also known as Farol da Guia, is a prominent maritime aid located on the eastern coast of Macau, China.

History

  • The East Watchtower Lighthouse was constructed in 1855 to serve as a navigational aid for mariners approaching the port of Macau. The lighthouse played a crucial role in guiding ships through the treacherous waters of the South China Sea during the 19th century.

Architecture and Construction

The tower stands at a height of 104.2 meters (342 feet) above sea level, with a focal height of approximately 120 meters (394 feet). The lighthouse is constructed from granite and features a distinctive octagonal shape. The structure was designed by British engineer John Thomas, who also designed several other notable lighthouses in the region.

Light Characteristics

The East Watchtower Lighthouse emits a fixed white light, visible from a range of 20 nautical miles (37 kilometers). The light is powered by an oil-fired lamp and is still operational today, although it has been automated since its decommissioning as a navigational aid.

Current Status

The lighthouse is currently operated as a museum, open to the public for guided tours. Visitors can explore the tower's interior, which features exhibits on the history of Macau and the maritime trade in the region.

Location and Accessibility

The East Watchtower Lighthouse is located at Estrada do Engenheiro Trigo, Macau. The site is easily accessible by car or public transportation, with several bus routes passing nearby.

Heritage Status

The East Watchtower Lighthouse was designated as a Grade I historic building by the Government of Macau in 2005, recognizing its cultural and historical significance.

Notable Historical Events

  • During World War II, the lighthouse played an important role in guiding Allied ships through the waters of the South China Sea. The tower also served as a beacon for refugees fleeing from mainland China during the Chinese Civil War.
