The Little Qingdao Lighthouse, also known as 老铁山灯塔 (Lǎo Tiě Shān Dēng Tá), is a historic lighthouse located on the coast of China.

History

• The construction of the Little Qingdao Lighthouse began in 1893 and was completed shortly after. The lighthouse played a crucial role in maritime navigation, particularly during the early 20th century. Its operation was automated in the mid-20th century, marking a significant shift towards modernization in China's coastal defense systems.

The Little Qingdao Lighthouse stands at a height of 14.2 meters (46.6 feet) above sea level and has a focal height of approximately 100 meters (328 feet). The lighthouse is constructed from traditional materials, including stone and brick, with a distinctive architectural style characteristic of early 20th-century Chinese coastal defense structures.

Light Characteristics

The Little Qingdao Lighthouse features a rotating light system with a pattern of Fl. W. 4s, indicating a white light visible for 25 nautical miles (46 kilometers). The lighthouse is equipped with a radiobeacon and radar transponder, providing additional navigation support to mariners.

Current Status

The Little Qingdao Lighthouse is currently an inactive aid to navigation, no longer actively used for maritime guidance. However, its historical significance has been recognized, and it has been designated as a National Cultural Relic Site (China's equivalent of UNESCO World Heritage Sites).

Location and Accessibility

The lighthouse is situated on the coast of Qingdao, Lüshunkou District, China. Visitors can access the site via the nearby Double Dawn Road (Shuang Mèng Lu), which offers stunning views of the surrounding coastline.

Heritage Status

In 2013, the Little Qingdao Lighthouse was designated as a National Cultural Relic Site by the State Administration of Cultural Heritage, recognizing its historical and cultural significance. The site is also listed on China's Industrial Heritage List, acknowledging its importance in the country's industrial development.

Notable Historical Events

• The Little Qingdao Lighthouse played a significant role during World War II, serving as an important aid to navigation for Allied forces. Its strategic location made it a key target for enemy forces, and the lighthouse was reportedly damaged during a Japanese bombing raid in 1942.
