Youneishan Lighthouse

The Youneishan Lighthouse is a historic lighthouse located on Yu-nui-san Island in Qingdao Jiaozhou Bay, China.

History

  • Construction of the lighthouse began in 1900 and was completed in 1901. The lighthouse played an important role in maritime navigation during the early 20th century, serving as a beacon for ships entering and exiting the busy port of Qingdao.
  • The Youneishan Lighthouse is a traditional Chinese-style lighthouse with a distinctive red-and-white striped tower. The tower stands at a height of 24 meters (79 feet) above sea level, while its focal height reaches 30 meters (98 feet). The lighthouse features three distinct light sources: one red, one white, and one green, each with a period of five seconds.

Light Characteristics

The Youneishan Lighthouse emits a distinctive pattern of red, white, and green lights to aid navigation. The range of the lighthouse is 15 nautical miles (28 kilometers) in all directions. A fog signal horn is also present, used to alert mariners in low-visibility conditions.

Current Status

The Youneishan Lighthouse was designated as a National Cultural Relic in 1992 and is currently maintained by the National Cultural Heritage Administration of China. The lighthouse has been automated since its decommissioning from active service, but it remains an important historical landmark and tourist attraction.

Location and Accessibility

The Youneishan Lighthouse is situated on Yu-nui-san Island in Qingdao Jiaozhou Bay, within the Shinan District of Qingdao City. The lighthouse can be accessed by boat or via a short walk from the nearby Qingdao Jiaozhou Bay Tunnel.

Heritage Status

The Youneishan Lighthouse has been recognized as a National Cultural Relic since 1992, acknowledging its importance in China's maritime history and cultural heritage.

Notable Historical Events

  • The Youneishan Lighthouse played a significant role during World War II, serving as a beacon for Allied ships entering the port of Qingdao. The lighthouse also experienced damage during the war, but was subsequently repaired and restored to its original condition.
