The exact date of construction is unclear, but records suggest that the Barra de Itabapoana Lighthouse has been in operation since at least the early 20th century. Its original purpose was to guide mariners through the treacherous waters surrounding the Barra Seca, a notorious sandbar formation known for its strong currents and shallow depths.
