Phare de Patiras
1 Saint-Paul, 33390 Saint-Androny, France
Name and Location
The Phare de Patiras, also known as the "Patiras Lighthouse", is located on the right bank of the Gironde estuary in the commune of Saint-Androny, Département Gironde, Nouvelle-Aquitaine, France.
2. Construction and History
The Phare de Patiras was built between 1862 and 1865 by the Corps des Ponts et Chaussées. It first lit up on October 15, 1865. The lighthouse served as a guide for vessels navigating between Bordeaux and the Atlantic until it was decommissioned on October 1, 1903, due to the construction of more powerful aids upriver.
3. Architecture and Materials
The Phare de Patiras is a freestanding cylindrical masonry tower originally with a lantern and gallery. The tower is made of locally quarried stone (limestone) and stands approximately 21 meters tall, with a focal plane at around 60 meters above sea level due to its natural hilltop location.
4. Light and Navigation
The Phare de Patiras once had a white flash every 30 seconds, with a nominal range of approximately 20 nautical miles.
5. Accessibility and Visiting
Visitors can access the Phare de Patiras by car via the D2 road from Pauillac/Cars or by boat during seasonal shuttle services from Pauillac port. The tower houses an interpretation centre, restaurant, and tearoom known as "Le Refuge de Patiras", which offers exhibitions, audiovisual presentations, and panoramic views over the estuary.
6. Notable Views and Landscape
The Phare de Patiras is perched on a wooded promontory overlooking the widest reach of the Gironde estuary. To the south lies the Médoc vineyard district, while to the north, on clear days, visitors can spot the twin spires of the Cordouan lighthouse at the river mouth.
7. Heritage Status
Although not listed as a "Monument historique" at the national level, the Phare de Patiras is protected under local planning regulations for its 19th-century industrial heritage.
8. Technical and Operational Details
The lighthouse's current condition is fully intact, with the tower and base preserved; however, the lantern room was removed in 1903.
