The light source is an automated electric lamp, formerly using acetylene.

The tower itself is not open to the public, but the grounds and base are visible from the Strandpromenade. Visitors can walk or cycle along the Pelzerhaken beach promenade off Wiesenstraße, approximately 2 kilometers east of Neustadt harbor. Parking and restrooms are available at the adjacent beach parking lot, as well as a nearby beach café.

Leuchtturm Pelzerhaken stands on gently sloping dunes above a broad sandy beach. From its base, one looks west toward Neustadt harbor and the open Bay of Lübeck; to the east, the coastline extends toward Grömitz. On clear days, Fehmarn island can be spotted on the horizon.

The lighthouse is fully automated with no resident keeper. It serves as a mark for the Pelzerhaken approach and warns of near-shore shallows and sandbanks. The chart references are German BA chart "Ostsee" series and international chart INT 71.
