The lighthouse was constructed in 1839 by the Commissioners of Irish Lights (CIL) to serve as a beacon for mariners navigating the treacherous waters off the northwestern coast of Ireland. The original tower stood at a height of 46 meters (151 feet), with a focal height of 46 meters and a light range of approximately 12 kilometers (7.5 miles).
