Alberoni Lighthouse

Alberoni, 30126, 30126 Venezia VE, Italy

Name and Location

The Alberoni Lighthouse is situated on the southern tip of the Lido di Venezia (Alberoni dunes), overlooking the entrance to the Venetian Lagoon. Its address is Strada Senza Nome, Alberoni, 30126 Venezia VE, Italy, with coordinates 45°20′02″ N, 12°20′35″ E.

Construction and History

The lighthouse was constructed in the mid-20th century, although the exact date of its construction is unrecorded. It appears on Italian admiralty lists under the generic tag of Punto d’Avvistamento Lido di Venezia. The lighthouse has been unmanned since its installation.

Architecture and Materials

The Alberoni Lighthouse is a functional, utilitarian steel tower with a concrete base. Its shape is short cylindrical or skeletal, estimated to be 6 meters above the base. The tower is painted metal, while the base is made of concrete.

Light and Navigation

The focal height of the lighthouse is approximately 10 meters above sea level (dune elevation + tower). It has a range of about 5 nautical miles with a characteristic of Fl(2) W 10 s (two white flashes every 10 seconds). The lighthouse does not have AIS or radar installed. Nautical chart reference: Istituto Idrografico della Marina, Chart 91 (approaches to Venice).

Accessibility and Visiting

The lighthouse is accessible on foot via the Alberoni beach promenade or by bicycle from Venice Lido town center (about 5 km south). However, public access is limited to exterior only, as the site lies within a protected dune reserve; no visitor facilities are available. The nearest services can be found at Alberoni hamlet (cafés, bus stop).

Notable Views and Landscape

The lighthouse stands amid shifting coastal dunes populated by maritime pines and hardy dune grasses. From its base one looks west over the open Adriatic; to the east lie the tidal flats and lagoon channels leading back into Venice. The stretch of beach here is popular with local windsurfers and birdwatchers.

Anecdotes and Folklore

Local oral history speaks of occasional winter storm damage to the dune access path, but the beacon itself has remained reliable. Former keepers are not recorded, as the station has been unmanned since its installation. No documented shipwrecks are directly associated with this minor light.

Technical and Operational Details

The lighthouse is automated and solar-powered. Its managing authority is Marina Militare (Italian Navy) – Servizio Fari e Segnalamenti. The lighthouse does not have heritage status as a historic monument.
