Faro di Scoglitti
Porto di Scoglitti Molo di Ponente, Via Venezia, 97019 Scoglitti RG, Italy
Name and Location
The Faro di Scoglitti is a harbour light located at the outer end of the western mole (Molo di Ponente) in the port of Scoglitti, a frazione of the Comune of Vittoria in the province of Ragusa, Sicily, Italy. The official name of the lighthouse is Faro di Scoglitti, and it is sometimes referred to as "il faro del porto" (the port lighthouse).
2. Construction and History
The lighthouse stands at the tip of a concrete breakwater that shelters Scoglitti's fishing port on Sicily's southern coast. The surrounding landscape is dominated by low dunes and olive groves inland, while to the south lies the Mediterranean Sea and the low-lying Hyblean plains.
3. Architecture and Materials
The lighthouse has a single-storey masonry or reinforced-concrete base surmounted by a small cylindrical tower. The structure is finished with smooth plaster painted white, with a lantern gallery painted in contrasting color (traditionally green or red). The materials used include reinforced concrete and steel for the gallery, and glass-paned lantern.
4. Light and Navigation
The lighthouse guides local fishing and pleasure craft into one of Sicily's active small harbours. The light has an estimated range of 3–5 nautical miles, serving harbour approaches. The power source is mains electricity, backed by automatic battery change-over. The lighthouse is fully automated.
5. Accessibility and Visiting
The quay to the lighthouse is open to pedestrians, allowing visitors to walk the length of the breakwater. However, the tower itself is not open to the public and is not staffed, so no internal tours are offered. Public parking is available along Via Venezia near the harbour entrance, and nearby cafes and seafood restaurants line the waterfront.
6. Notable Views and Landscape
Visitors can enjoy scenic views of the Mediterranean Sea and the surrounding landscape from the breakwater promenade, which is just 200 meters west of the lighthouse. The historic centre of Vittoria, with its Baroque churches and local markets, is also within easy reach.
8. Technical and Operational Details
The managing authority for the lighthouse is the Lighthouse Service, Marina Militare (Italian Navy), Roma – Servizio Fari e Segnalamenti. Periodic inspection and painting are carried out under the Navy's regional marine signals unit.
