Semaforo di Monte Grosso was built during the Napoleonic period (circa 1811–1813). It was part of an optical-semaphore network linking coastal fortifications and harbors between Livorno and Piombino. The tower is a free-standing masonry signal tower with a square plan, constructed using local limestone and mortar. It stands approximately 8–10 metres above its base.
