Construction and History

Semaforo di Monte Grosso was built during the Napoleonic period (circa 1811–1813). It was part of an optical-semaphore network linking coastal fortifications and harbors between Livorno and Piombino. The original use was for visual signaling, and it ceased operation in the mid-19th century when electrical telegraph lines were introduced.

Architecture and Materials

The tower is a free-standing masonry signal tower with a square plan, constructed using local limestone and mortar. It stands approximately 8–10 metres above its base. The style is military/utility architecture of the early 1800s, characterized by thick walls, narrow window slits, and iron pivot-points for semaphore arms.

Light and Navigation

There is no light or navigation functionality currently active at Semaforo di Monte Grosso. Its original purpose was visual signaling, which ceased in the mid-19th century when electrical telegraph lines were introduced.

The site is accessible via a circa 3 km hiking trail (marked “Sentiero del Semaforo”) starting near Rio nell’Elba’s town center. Notable Views and Landscape

Perched at roughly 350 m above sea level, the semaphore tower commands panoramic vistas of the Gulf of Follonica and the Piombino promontory to the north, as well as the islands of Elba (immediately below), Capraia, and Corsica on the horizon. The surrounding landscape features Mediterranean maquis and terraced vineyards covering Monte Grosso’s slopes.
