The Shōjima Saki Lighthouse is located in Minamiboso, Chiba, Japan, situated on Shōjima Island.

Construction and History

Built in 1897, this historic lighthouse was designed by Japanese architect Taro Okai. Initially operated manually, it was automated in 1970 to reduce maintenance costs and improve efficiency. Today, it remains an important aid to navigation for vessels transiting the area.

The lighthouse stands at an impressive height of 23.5 meters (77 feet), with a focal height of 52 meters (171 feet) above sea level. Constructed from concrete and steel, it was designed by Taro Okai, incorporating local materials and architectural elements into the design.

Light and Navigation

The lighthouse's original light source was a kerosene lamp, replaced in 1963 by an electric beacon emitting a Fl(3)W.15s pattern. The light has a range of approximately 19 kilometers (12 miles), guiding ships safely through the surrounding waters.

Visitors can access the lighthouse grounds, but the interior is not open to the public. Guided tours are available by appointment only.
