Construction and History

The Dog Island Lighthouse was built in 1882 during the Victorian era. It has been guiding mariners through the treacherous waters of Foveaux Strait since its construction.

Architecture and Materials

The lighthouse stands at a height of 46 meters (151 feet) above sea level. It was designed in a classic cylindrical shape with a white-painted exterior, constructed from brick and stone.

Light and Navigation

The original light featured a white light with a range of 19 nautical miles (35 kilometers), flashing every 10 seconds. Although the original light has been replaced by an automated system, the tower still proudly displays its original character: Fl(1)W.15s. Today, it serves as a reserve aid to navigation.

Accessibility and Visiting

Visitors can reach the lighthouse via a short hike from Tiwai Point, located approximately 15 kilometers (9 miles) northwest of Invercargill City. The surrounding landscape offers breathtaking views of Foveaux Strait and the Southland Region.

Notable Views and Landscape

The lighthouse is situated within the Tiwai Point Reserve, a protected area that preserves the natural beauty of the surrounding coastline. The reserve offers scenic walking trails, birdwatching opportunities, and stunning views of Foveaux Strait.

Technical and Operational Details

In 1983, the lighthouse was automated, freeing former keepers from the arduous task of manually maintaining the light. It is managed by Heritage New Zealand, a government agency responsible for preserving the country's cultural heritage.
