Construction and History
The Tawas Point Lighthouse was constructed in 1853 by the United States Government to guide mariners through the treacherous waters of Lake Huron. The original tower stood at a height of 35 feet (10.7 meters) with a distinctive black and white striped design. Over the years, the lighthouse underwent several renovations, including the addition of a new lens in 1885.
Architecture and Materials
The current structure is an excellent example of Late 19th-century lighthouse architecture. The tower stands at a height of 66 feet (20.1 meters) with a distinctive red-and-white striped design, replacing the original black and white stripes.

The Tawas Point Lighthouse is an active aid to navigation, emitting a fixed white light every 15 seconds with a range of approximately 17 nautical miles (31 kilometers).
