Name and Location
Macduff Pier Lighthouse stands at the head of the east pier in Macduff harbour on the Moray Firth coast of Aberdeenshire, Scotland, United Kingdom.
Construction and History
The lighthouse's construction materials and architect are not recorded. It was built to guide local and visiting small craft into the sheltered waters of Macduff Bay.
Architecture and Materials
The light tower is a simple, functional design—a square-sectioned steel or cast-iron column mounted on the pier head with a lantern and gallery. The tower stands approximately 12 metres above sea level.
Light and Navigation
Macduff Pier Lighthouse exhibits three sector lights of different colours, all flashing in a two-flash group every six seconds (group 2). Sector 1 is green, covering bearings 040°–115°; Sector 2 is white, covering bearings 115°–174°; and Sector 3 is red, covering bearings 174°–210°.
Accessibility and Visiting
The lighthouse is unmanned and fully automated. Public access to the pier is unrestricted at all tide levels, though care should be taken on wet or slippery surfaces. There are no visitor facilities on the pier itself, but public toilets and a café are within easy walking distance on Shore Street.
Notable Views and Landscape
From the pier head, there are panoramic views across Banff Bay toward the headland at Collieston and the Moray Firth coastline. On clear days, the hills of Moray and the Southern Highlands can be seen to the west and north.
Technical and Operational Details
The lighthouse has an Admiralty number (A 3348) and is listed in NGA publications (Pub. 114). It is maintained for operational safety by the local harbour authority under the oversight of the Northern Lighthouse Board's regional coastal navigation team.
