Construction and History

The Port Shepstone Lighthouse was constructed on a hill overlooking the Indian Ocean at an elevation of approximately 30 meters above sea level. It has been guiding ships safely through the waters since 1925.

The tower is built on a concrete foundation and has a square base, with each side measuring about 5 meters in length. The lighthouse's lantern room contains a distinctive Fresnel lens, which amplifies the light to increase its range and visibility.

The lighthouse's character is marked by flashing white lights every six seconds, with a range of 26 miles and a sector that spans from 215 to 28 degrees. The light is visible for 0.3 seconds out of a five-second period, followed by a blank interval of 5.7 seconds. This unique sequence helps vessels identify the lighthouse more easily, especially during periods of low visibility.
