2. Construction and History

The lighthouse was built in the early 20th century, with commissioning in the 1920s. It replaced earlier beacons serving local fishing and trade, and is sited to illuminate the steep Flysch formations known for shipwreck hazards.

3. Architecture and Materials

The Zumaia Lighthouse has a cylindrical tower with a lantern and gallery attached to a single-storey keeper's dwelling. The tower is made of painted masonry (white) with a contrasting lantern room. It stands 41 meters above ground level and approximately 41 meters above mean sea level.

4. Light and Navigation

The lighthouse features an occulting white light, grouping "1+3" flashes every 12 seconds. Its nominal range is 12 nautical miles. The light characteristic is Oc (1+3) W 12 s. The lighthouse is fully automated and does not have a permanent keeper on site.

5. Accessibility and Visiting

The tower and lantern are closed to the public, but the grounds may be approached via the coastal promenade. Visitors can reach the site on foot or by car from Zumaia town centre via Julio Beobide Ibiltokia. Parking and pedestrian paths connect to the nearby Itzurun Beach.

6. Notable Views and Landscape

Perched atop coastal limestone terraces, the lighthouse commands 180-degree views of the Cantabrian Sea, the Flysch rock layers (a UNESCO Global Geopark feature), and the sandy cove of Itzurun. At dusk, its white beam sweeps across the water against a backdrop of green hills and terracotta-roofed houses.

8. Technical and Operational Details

The lighthouse is managed by Comisión de Faros, Ministry of Transport, Mobility and Urban Agenda (Gobierno de España), and maintained by Port Authority of the Basque Country (Autoridad Portuaria de Pasaia). It is an active aid to navigation.
