Designed in the Victorian-era style, the lighthouse features a distinctive pyramidal shape with a red-brick exterior. The tower was built using local stone and brick, while the lantern room was constructed from iron.

The lighthouse originally featured a third-order Fresnel lens, which emitted a characteristic light pattern of three flashes every 15 seconds (Fl(3)W.15s). The light range is approximately 20 nautical miles (37 kilometers).
