2. Construction and History

The original Cockspur Island Lighthouse was built in 1847 during the Antebellum era. Unfortunately, it was destroyed by Confederate forces in 1861 to prevent its use by Union ships. A new lighthouse was constructed on the same site in 1857, featuring a unique Towerscope design. The current lighthouse was automated in 1970.

The Cockspur Island Lighthouse stands at an impressive 108 feet (33 meters) tall, with a focal height of 85 feet (26 meters) above sea level. It was constructed using local limestone and brick, with a distinctive Federal-style architecture design.

The original light was powered by kerosene, and later, a DC-powered light was installed. The lighthouse is currently not operational for navigation purposes.
