Construction and History

The Minnesota Point Light was constructed in 1913 and has been guiding mariners through the treacherous waters of Lake Superior since then. It was designed by architect Frederick Virden and built using local materials.

Architecture and Materials

The lighthouse is a cylindrical, brick-and-concrete structure standing approximately 60 feet (18 meters) tall, with a focal height of 54 feet (16.5 meters). Its architectural style is characteristic of the early 20th-century lighthouses in the region.

Light and Navigation

The original light source was an oil lamp with a fixed white beam, which was later replaced by a Fresnel lens in 1923. Today, the light is automated and emits a Fl(3)W.15s pattern (three flashes of white light every 15 seconds).

Notable Views and Landscape

The nearby Canal Park and the Aerial Lift Bridge offer additional scenic views and attractions. The lighthouse is situated within the Duluth Parks and Recreation system, providing a range of outdoor activities such as hiking, birdwatching, and picnicking.
