Construction and History

The New Dungeness Lighthouse was constructed in 1858 by the United States government to aid navigation through the treacherous waters of the Strait of Juan de Fuca. The original tower was designed by architect Henry C. Stevens, who drew inspiration from traditional lighthouses along the East Coast of the United States. A severe storm damaged the original tower in 1889, leading to its eventual replacement in 1890 with a new structure also designed by Henry C. Stevens.

Architecture and Materials

The New Dungeness Lighthouse is made of wood and stands at an impressive height of 82 feet (25 meters) with a focal height of 81 feet (24.6 meters).

Light and Navigation

The lighthouse originally displayed a fixed white light, but in 1890, it was upgraded to a third-order Fresnel lens, emitting a Fl(3)W.15s light characteristic – a flash every 15 seconds with three white flashes followed by one second of darkness.

Accessibility and Visiting

Visitors can access the lighthouse grounds via Unnamed Road in Sequim, WA 98382. While the tower itself is not open to the public for climbing or exploration, a short walk from the parking lot provides stunning vistas of the surrounding landscape.
