Name and Location

The North Head Lighthouse is located in Ilwaco, Washington, USA (46.2989072° N, -124.0779626° W) on the Columbia River.

Construction and History

Built in 1898, this lighthouse was constructed to aid navigation and warn mariners of potential hazards in the region. Initially, it was manually operated by keepers who maintained the light and assisted mariners in distress. In 1973, the Coast Guard automated the light, making it one of the first in the region to be automated.

Architecture and Materials

The lighthouse features a classical-style tower with a square base, gradually tapering to an octagonal shape near the top. The structure is constructed from concrete and has a distinctive red-roofed lantern room housing the original Fresnel lens.

Light and Navigation

The lighthouse stands at a height of approximately 194 feet (59 meters), with a focal plane elevation of around 19 feet (5.8 meters) above sea level. Its white light characteristic is Fl (3) W.15s, indicating three flashes every 15 seconds. The original optic was replaced in 1922 by a more efficient Fresnel lens.

Accessibility and Visiting

Visitors can access the lighthouse grounds through Washington State Parks' North Head Park. The park offers scenic views of the Columbia River and surrounding coastline. Guided tours are available during peak season (June to September), while self-guided visits are possible at other times. Entrance fees apply, with special rates for seniors, military personnel, and children.
