Kihnu Lighthouse

History

• The Kihnu lighthouse was constructed in 1857, during the period of the Russian Empire's rule over Estonia. Its primary purpose was to serve as a navigational aid for mariners approaching the port of Pärnu.

Architecture and Construction Materials

The tower stands at a height of 29 meters above sea level, with a focal height of approximately 50 meters. The lighthouse is constructed from limestone and granite, typical materials used in Estonian coastal architecture during that era. Its distinctive design features a cylindrical shape with a lantern room at the top.

Light Characteristics

• The Kihnu lighthouse emits two distinct light patterns: one white light with a period of 12 seconds, visible up to 11 nautical miles away; and another red light with the same characteristics, visible up to 7 nautical miles away. The light is characterized by a Fl (flash) pattern.

Current Status

The Kihnu lighthouse remains an active aid to navigation, although it has been automated since its construction. Today, it serves as a museum, open to visitors who wish to learn about Estonia's maritime history and the significance of this historic structure.

The Kihnu lighthouse is situated on the island of Kihnu in the Gulf of Finland, approximately 12 kilometers off the coast of Pärnu. The nearest town is Kihnu vald, accessible by road or ferry from Pärnu. Visitors can reach the lighthouse via a short walk from the nearby Lennujaam – Suigu.
