Ristna Tuletorn

The Ristna tuletorn, also known as Ristna Lighthouse, has a long history dating back to 1892.

History

  • The Ristna tuletorn was constructed by Estonian engineer and architect Gustav Säve-Möller in 1892 to serve as a navigational aid for mariners in the Baltic Sea.
  • The lighthouse has been automated since its installation in the early 20th century, but remains an important navigational reference point for mariners in the region.

Architecture

The Ristna tuletorn is a characteristic example of late 19th-century lighthouse design. The tower stands at a height of 37 meters (121 feet) above sea level and has a focal height of approximately 50 meters (164 feet).

The lighthouse features a distinctive cylindrical shape with a square base, topped by a lantern room containing a Fresnel lens.

Light Characteristics

  • The primary light source emits a white beam with a range of 12 nautical miles and a period of 15 seconds.
  • The secondary light source produces a red beam with a range of 8 nautical miles and the same period as the primary light.

Current Status

The Ristna tuletorn is currently an active aid to navigation, although it has been automated since its installation in the early 20th century.

Location and Accessibility

Located on the island of Hiiumaa in Estonia, the Ristna tuletorn can be accessed via a short walk from the nearby town center. Visitors can view the lighthouse from a distance, but access to the tower itself is restricted due to safety concerns.

Heritage Status

The Ristna tuletorn has been recognized as a cultural monument of national significance in Estonia.

Notable Historical Events

  • During World War II, the Ristna tuletorn played a significant role in the defense of Estonia against German occupation forces.
  • In 1944, the lighthouse was used as a beacon to guide Allied naval vessels into the Baltic Sea.
