Kölpin Mole

The Kölpin Mole is a lighthouse located on the island of Rügien, off the coast of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Germany.

History

• The Kölpin Mole was constructed in 1882 to serve as a navigational aid for mariners approaching the port of Waren (Müritz).

Architecture

The Kölpin Mole is a tall, slender tower constructed from red sandstone. It stands at a height of approximately 24 meters (79 feet) above sea level, while its focal height reaches an impressive 40 meters (131 feet).

The lighthouse features a distinctive octagonal shape and is topped with a lantern room containing the light source.

Light Characteristics

• The Kölpin Mole emits three distinct lights: green, white, and red.
• Each light has a range of approximately 8 nautical miles and flashes at a period of four seconds.
• The character of each light is designated as "Oc", indicating that they are occulting lights.

Current Status

As of the current year, the Kölpin Mole remains an active aid to navigation, although it has been automated since its restoration in 2015.

However, due to concerns over safety and accessibility, the lighthouse is no longer open to visitors for climbing or maintenance purposes.
