Leuchtturm Memmertfeuer

The Leuchtturm Memmertfeuer is a historic lighthouse located on the island of Juist, Germany.

History

  • The construction of the Leuchtturm Memmertfeuer began in 1884 and was completed in 1885. The tower was built to serve as an aid to navigation for mariners approaching the port of Emden.
  • The lighthouse stands at a height of approximately 25 meters (82 feet) above sea level, with a focal height of about 30 meters (98 feet). It is constructed from red sandstone and features a distinctive octagonal tower. The tower's architecture is characteristic of the late 19th-century German lighthouses.

Light Characteristics

  • The Leuchtturm Memmertfeuer was equipped with a first-order Fresnel lens, which emitted a white light visible up to 20 nautical miles (37 kilometers) in all directions. The light pattern was characterized by a rotating beam that swept through the horizon every 10 minutes.

The lighthouse is no longer an active aid to navigation and has been automated since its decommissioning in the mid-20th century. Today, it serves as a museum and a popular tourist attraction.
