Φάρος Πάπα

The Φάρος Πάπα (Papa Lighthouse) is a historic lighthouse located on the Greek island of Kefalonia.

History

• The Papa Lighthouse was constructed in 1895, during the period of Ottoman rule in Greece. The structure has undergone several renovations and restorations over the years to maintain its original purpose as a navigational aid for ships.

Architecture

The lighthouse stands at a height of approximately 30 meters (98 feet) above sea level, with a focal height of around 50 meters (164 feet). Its distinctive architectural style is characterized by a cylindrical tower made from limestone and granite blocks. The structure's design was influenced by traditional Greek architecture, with a red-painted wooden lantern room at the top.

Light Characteristics

The Papa Lighthouse features a fixed beam of green light that can be seen up to 20 nautical miles (37 kilometers) out to sea. The light is powered by an oil-fired lamp and has been automated since its restoration in the 1990s.

Current Status

The Papa Lighthouse is currently an active aid to navigation, although it has undergone significant renovations to ensure its continued operation. In recent years, the lighthouse has also served as a museum, offering visitors a glimpse into its rich history and cultural significance.
