Φάρος Λιθάρι Σκύρος

The Φάρος Λिथάρι Σκύρος (Skyros Lighthouse) is a historic lighthouse located on the Greek island of Skyros, in the Euboea Regional Unit.

History

  • The lighthouse was constructed in 1891 by the British engineer and architect, George William Macartney.
  • It was built to serve as a navigational aid for mariners approaching the port of Skyros.
  • The lighthouse has undergone several renovations and restorations over the years, with the most recent one taking place in the 1990s.

Architecture

The Φάρος Λιθάρι Σκύρος is a tall, cylindrical tower made of limestone and granite blocks. It stands at a height of 25 meters (82 feet) above sea level, while its focal height reaches 40 meters (131 feet).

The lighthouse features a distinctive red-and-white striped pattern on its exterior, which can be seen from a distance.

Light Characteristics

The Φάρος Λιθάρι Σκύρος is equipped with a first-order Fresnel lens, which produces a beam of light that can be seen up to 20 nautical miles (37 kilometers) out to sea.

The lighthouse emits a red light, visible during the day and night.

Current Status

The Φάρος Λιθάρι Σκύρος is currently an active aid to navigation, although it has been automated since the 1990s.

It remains in operation as a working lighthouse, providing vital guidance for mariners approaching the port of Skyros.
