Skarð Lighthouse
The Skarð lighthouse was built to serve as a navigational aid for mariners in the waters surrounding the island of Kunoy, located off the east coast of Iceland.
History
- The village of Skarð, which it was intended to support, had a tragic history. On December 23, 1913, all seven able-bodied men from the village perished while out fishing in their boat.
- In the following years, the surviving women and children left the village for Haraldssund to the south, with the last one departing in 1919.
Architecture
The Skarð lighthouse is a notable structure, standing at an impressive height of 52 meters (171 feet) above sea level. Its focal height, which is the distance from the base of the tower to the top of the light source, reaches 65 meters (213 feet).
The lighthouse features six distinct light patterns, each with its own unique characteristics and ranges, including a green light visible up to 12 nautical miles, a red light visible up to 16 nautical miles.
The lighthouse's architecture is notable for its use of traditional Faroese materials, such as turf and stone. The tower itself is constructed from local granite, while the surrounding structure is built using turf and other natural materials.
Location
The Skarð lighthouse is located in the village of Skarðsviti on the island of Kunoy, which is part of the Faroe Islands.
Two footpaths lead to the lighthouse: one along the coast from Haraldssund and another that climbs over the pass of Skarðsgjógv from the west-coast village of Kunoy.
