History

1. The construction of the Mercusuar Kampala began in 1908 and was completed in 1910, during the Dutch colonial period. The lighthouse played an important role in maritime navigation, serving as a beacon for ships approaching the port of Jeneponto.

Architecture

The tower height of the Mercusuar Kampala is approximately 30 meters (98 feet), while its focal height reaches up to 50 meters (164 feet). The lighthouse features a distinctive cylindrical structure with a square base and a lantern room at the top. The building's design is characteristic of Dutch colonial architecture, using local materials such as wood and stone.

Light Characteristics

The Mercusuar Kampala emits a fixed red light, visible from a distance of up to 20 nautical miles (37 kilometers). The lighthouse's light pattern is not automated, relying on human operators to maintain the beam.

Current Status

The Mercusuar Kampala is no longer an active aid to navigation. However, it has been converted into a museum and cultural center, showcasing the history of maritime trade in Indonesia.
