Inishtrahull Lighthouse

The Inishtrahull Lighthouse was constructed in 1858 to serve as a navigational aid for mariners approaching the northernmost point of Ireland, known as Tor Beg rock.

History

The lighthouse has played a crucial role in maritime safety and navigation for over 160 years.
In 1929, the island of Inishtrahull was evacuated due to declining population numbers.
The lighthouse remained staffed until 1987, marking a significant shift towards automation in Irish maritime services.

Architecture

The Inishtrahull Lighthouse is a characteristic example of Victorian-era lighthouse design. Built using local limestone and granite, its distinctive tower stands at approximately 25 metres (82 feet) tall, with a focal height of around 30 metres (98 feet).
