History
Construction of the lighthouse began in 1855. The structure was built to serve as a navigational aid for mariners approaching the coast of Sligo Bay.
Architecture
The tower stands at a height of 13 metres (43 feet) above sea level. Its focal height is 19 metres (62 feet). The light source emits a white beam with a range of 10 nautical miles and a period of four seconds, displaying an "Oc" character in its sequence.

The lighthouse's structure was built using traditional materials for the time, including stone and ironwork.

The Oyster Island Lighthouse is currently not active. It has been automated, but no longer serves as a navigational aid.
