Slyne Head Lighthouse

The Slyne Head Lighthouse is a historic lighthouse located at the westernmost point of County Galway, Ireland.

History

• The first lighthouse on this site was built in 1836 by the Commissioners of Irish Lights (CIL). A second lighthouse was constructed nearby, but it remains unclear whether both structures were ever operational. The current lighthouse is believed to have been built around the same time as the first one and has been maintained by CIL.

Architecture

The Slyne Head Lighthouse stands at a height of 35 metres (115 feet) above sea level, with its focal height reaching 50 metres (164 feet). It features a distinctive cylindrical tower constructed from stone. The lighthouse is equipped with a rotating optic that emits a white light with a range of 19 nautical miles and a period of 15 seconds.

Light Characteristics

The Slyne Head Lighthouse emits a Fl (first order) light, visible at a distance of 19 nautical miles. The light sequence consists of a main beam followed by two secondary beams spaced 2.4 and 12.4 minutes apart.

Current Status

The lighthouse remains an active aid to navigation, although it is reportedly automated. It has been maintained by CIL since its construction in 1836.

Location and Accessibility

The Slyne Head Lighthouse is situated at the westernmost point of County Galway, approximately 12 kilometres southwest of Dunloughan. The lighthouse can be accessed via a public road, but there are no facilities for visitors.
