History

The lighthouse was constructed in 1908 as part of a series of coastal defenses to protect Japanese ports from foreign naval vessels. It played an essential role in the country's maritime security during World War II and has since been decommissioned.

Architecture

The Shimotsu Okinoshima Lighthouse is a traditional Japanese lighthouse with a distinctive octagonal tower. The structure is made of reinforced concrete, with a height of 40 meters (131 feet) above sea level. The focal height is approximately 55 meters (180 feet), allowing for a significant range of visibility.

Light Characteristics

The lighthouse emits a fixed red light, visible from a distance of up to 20 nautical miles. The light pattern is not automated and is instead operated manually by the Arida Coast Guard Station.

The Shimotsu Okinoshima Lighthouse is currently decommissioned and no longer serves as an active aid to navigation. However, it has been preserved as a historic landmark and is occasionally used for educational purposes.

Heritage Status

The lighthouse was designated as a National Historic Landmark in 2013, recognizing its importance in Japan's maritime history.

Notable Historical Events

  • During World War II, the Shimotsu Okinoshima Lighthouse played a crucial role in guiding Japanese naval vessels through the Hasse Strait.
  • In the post-war period, the lighthouse was decommissioned and left to decay. However, efforts were made to preserve its historic significance and restore it to its original condition.
