Farol da Inhaca

The Farol da Inhaca is a historic lighthouse located on the island of Inhaca, off the coast of Maputo, Mozambique.

History

• The Farol da Inhaca was constructed in 1913 by the Portuguese, who built it to serve as a navigational aid for ships entering the port of Maputo. The lighthouse played an important role in the country's maritime history and has been designated as a national monument.

Architecture

The tower stands at a height of approximately 25 meters (82 feet) above sea level, with a focal height of about 30 meters (98 feet). The structure is made from concrete and features a distinctive octagonal shape. The lighthouse was designed by the Portuguese architect José Maria da Silva, who also designed several other notable structures in Mozambique.

Light Characteristics

The Farol da Inhaca emits a fixed red light with a range of approximately 10 nautical miles (18.5 kilometers). The light is still operational today and serves as an important aid to navigation for mariners entering the port of Maputo.
