Nedstrand Lighthouse

The Nedstrand Lighthouse is situated on the southeast coast of the Nedstrand peninsula in Tysvær municipality, Rogaland county, Norway.

The village of Hindaråvåg lies just west of Nedstrand, while Nedstrand Church is nearby. The lighthouse is accessible via Leiråvegen.

History

The Nedstrand Lighthouse was built in 1903 as part of a major project to improve maritime safety in the region.

The lighthouse has undergone several renovations and restorations over the years, with the most recent being in the 1990s.

Architecture

The Nedstrand Lighthouse is a traditional Norwegian lighthouse design, featuring a hexagonal tower with a distinctive lantern room at the top.

The tower stands at approximately 25 meters (82 feet) tall, while the focal height is around 30 meters (98 feet).

The lighthouse has six distinct light characteristics, each with its own unique sequence and pattern.

The Nedstrand Lighthouse emits a green light with a range of 5.9 nautical miles in all directions.

The light has a period of four seconds and is visible from a distance of up to seven nautical miles.

Current Status

The Nedstrand Lighthouse is currently an active aid to navigation, although it has been automated since the 1990s.

The lighthouse remains an important navigational aid for mariners in the region.

Heritage Status

The Nedstrand Lighthouse was listed as a protected cultural heritage site in Norway in 2001.

Notable Historical Events

In 1983, the oil rig Alexander L. Kielland was scuttled in the Nedstrandsfjorden after it had capsized in the North Sea in 1980, killing 123 people.
