Granholmen Lighthouse
Granholmen is an island lighthouse located in the Stockholm archipelago in Sweden. The island has been inhabited since the 1860s, when Erik and Carl Fredrik Granholm bought it.
- The lighthouse was built to serve as a navigation aid for mariners in the Höggarnsfjärden waterway.
- It stands at a height of approximately 4 meters (13 feet) above sea level, with a focal height of around 6 meters (20 feet).
The lighthouse emits a distinctive pattern of Fl (first order) lights at intervals of 3 seconds. The light characteristics are as follows:
- First order: Green, 4 meters above sea level, 319.5° sector end, 3-second period
- Second order: White, 4 meters above sea level, 350° sector start, 3-second period
- Third order: Red, 4 meters above sea level, 39° sector start, 3-second period
Location
Granholmen is located in the Höggarnsfjärden waterway to the south of Vaxholm and Karlsudd, and north of Stora and Lilla Höggarn.
- The island has no road connection to the mainland or other islands, but is served by passenger ships of the Waxholmsbolaget, which call at a pier at the eastern end of the island.
Granholmen can be visited throughout the year, although it is not possible to drive onto the island. The nearest town is Vaxholm, which is accessible by ferry or car from Stockholm city.
Heritage Status
Granholmen is a notable example of a lighthouse in the Stockholm archipelago, and has been designated as such by the Swedish Heritage Agency.
