The Kaohsiung Lighthouse, also known as 高雄燈塔 (Gāoxiōng Dēntá) or Cijin Lighthouse, is a prominent maritime aid located on the island of Cijin in Kaohsiung, Taiwan.

History

The construction of the lighthouse began in 1911 and was completed in 1913. It has been an important navigational aid for mariners since its inception, serving as a beacon to guide ships through the busy shipping lanes of the Taiwan Strait.

Architecture

The Kaohsiung Lighthouse stands at a height of 50 meters (164 feet) above sea level and features a distinctive white tower with a square base. The lighthouse's architectural style is characteristic of early 20th-century lighthouses, with a focus on functionality and simplicity. The structure is made from local materials, including stone and brick.

Light Characteristics

The Kaohsiung Lighthouse emits a flashing light pattern of Fl (first order) every 30 seconds, visible for a range of 25.2 nautical miles. The light's color is white, and it is designed to be seen during the day as well as at night.

Current Status

The lighthouse remains an active aid to navigation, although its role has been supplemented by modern electronic aids to navigation in recent years. While still operational, the lighthouse is not as frequently used as it once was, and its primary function is now largely ceremonial.
