Taigh-solais Rubha Àirinis

The Taigh-solais Rubha Àirinis, also known as Arnish Point Lighthouse, is situated on The Arnish Road in Stornoway, the capital of the Outer Hebrides in the United Kingdom. This remote location makes it accessible only by foot or by vehicle.

History and Construction

The lighthouse was constructed in 1857 to serve as a navigational aid for mariners approaching the island's coastline. The structure has undergone several renovations over the years, with the most recent being in the early 20th century.

Architecture and Materials

The Taigh-solais Rubha Àirinis is a traditional lighthouse design, featuring a cylindrical tower with a distinctive lantern room at its summit. The tower stands at a height of approximately 17 meters (56 feet), while the focal height reaches up to 25 meters (82 feet). The lighthouse's exterior is constructed from local stone and features a distinctive red-and-white striped pattern.

Light Characteristics

The lighthouse emits three distinct light patterns, each with its own unique characteristics. The primary beam is white, with a range of approximately 19 nautical miles, while the secondary beam is red, with a range of around 15 nautical miles. The tertiary beam is also white, with a range of up to 19 nautical miles.

Current Status

The Taigh-solais Rubha Àirinis remains an active aid to navigation, operated by the Northern Lighthouse Board. While it is still in use today, the lighthouse has been automated since its construction.

Heritage Status

The Arnish Point Lighthouse was designated as a Category A listed building by Historic Environment Scotland in 1998, recognizing its historical and architectural significance.
