Barns Ness Lighthouse

The Barns Ness Lighthouse was constructed between 1899 and 1901 by David A. Stevenson and Charles Alexander Stevenson, cousins of the renowned novelist Robert Louis Stevenson.

History

  • The lighthouse took approximately 2½ years to complete and was built from stone quarried from Craigree (near Cramond) and Barnton.
  • The keepers' cottages are one-floored, flat-roofed buildings coated with harling but have their quoins exposed.

Architecture

The Barns Ness Lighthouse is a tall tower, slightly tapered with a circular section having a circular lantern.

  • The lantern features triangular panes and a domed roof.
  • A sundial and flagpole were also part of the lighthouse compound.

The Barns Ness Lighthouse was equipped with a sealed beam light system that produced up to 1,300,000 candlepower.
