Bell Rock Lighthouse

The Bell Rock Lighthouse is a historic lighthouse located on the Bell Rock, off the coast of Angus, Scotland.

History

• Construction of the Bell Rock Lighthouse began in 1811 and was completed in 1814 by architect Robert Stevenson, who later became famous for designing the famous literary landmark, The Old Manse. The lighthouse was designed to serve as a beacon for mariners navigating the treacherous waters of the North Sea.

Architecture

The Bell Rock Lighthouse stands at a height of 35.3 meters (116 feet) above sea level and has a focal height of 28 meters (92 feet). Its distinctive design features a cylindrical tower with a lantern room at its top, housing a first-order Fresnel lens that emits a beam of light 18 nautical miles into the distance.

Light Characteristics

The lighthouse is equipped with a rotating light that flashes in a Fl (first order) pattern, visible from 18 nautical miles away. The light's period is 5 seconds and its height is 28 meters above sea level.

Current Status

The Bell Rock Lighthouse is currently an automated aid to navigation, operated by the Northern Lighthouse Board. Although it was once a vital aid to mariners, the lighthouse has been largely superseded by more modern aids to navigation.
