Sgeirean Dubha Lighthouse

The Sgeirean Dubha Lighthouse has been guiding mariners through the treacherous waters of the Atlantic coast since its construction began in 1954.

History

The lighthouse was built to replace an earlier aid to navigation, and it officially came into service on May 26, 1955.

Architecture and Construction

The Sgeirean Dubha Lighthouse stands at a height of 7 metres (23 feet) above the sea level, with a focal height of 25 metres (82 feet).

The tower is constructed from cast iron, with a distinctive black-and-white striped pattern that helps to reduce glare.
The lighthouse has a characteristic four-section optic lens, which is designed to produce a powerful beam of light that can be seen for up to 5 nautical miles.

The Sgeirean Dubha Lighthouse emits a white light that flashes in a sequence of Fl (first order) and 0.5+(1.5)+0.5+(9.5).

Current Status

The Sgeirean Dubha Lighthouse is currently an automated aid to navigation, with its light source and optics maintained by the UK Hydrographic Office.

However, the lighthouse is no longer used as a primary aid to navigation, and it has been largely replaced by more modern aids to navigation in the area.

The Sgeirean Dubha Lighthouse is located on Gallanach Road, near Oban in the United Kingdom.

The lighthouse can be accessed via a public road, although parking may be limited during peak tourist season.

Heritage Status

The Sgeirean Dubha Lighthouse has been designated as a Category B listed building by Historic Environment Scotland, recognizing its importance as an example of mid-20th century lighthouse design and construction.
