History

• The lighthouse was constructed in 1900 to serve as a navigational aid for ships approaching the Toward Point, a rocky outcropping that marks the entrance to the Sound of Mull. The structure has played a crucial role in maritime safety and navigation ever since its construction.

The Toward Point Lighthouse is a tall, white-painted tower with a distinctive octagonal shape. It stands at a height of 21 meters (69 feet) above sea level, while its focal height reaches an impressive 61 meters (200 feet). The lighthouse features a characteristic rotating light that emits a beam of white light, visible up to 22 nautical miles away.

Light Characteristics

The Toward Point Lighthouse is equipped with a rotating optic that displays a flashing light pattern. The light has a period of 10 seconds and is visible in all directions from the tower.

The lighthouse remains an active aid to navigation, although it has been automated since its construction. It continues to serve as a vital reference point for mariners navigating the waters around Mull.
