Bass River Light (West Dennis Light)

The Bass River Light, also known as West Dennis Light, is situated on Lighthouse Inn Road 1 in Dennis, Massachusetts, United States.

History

• Built in 1858, the Bass River Light has been guiding mariners through the Bass River Harbor for over 160 years. The lighthouse was constructed to serve as a vital aid to navigation, providing a safe passage for ships and boats navigating the treacherous waters of the Cape Cod Canal.

Architecture

The Bass River Light is a classic example of a 19th-century lighthouse design. Constructed from granite and stonework, the tower stands at an impressive height of 65 feet (20 meters) above sea level. The focal height, which is the distance from the base of the lens to the top of the light, reaches an altitude of 95 feet (29 meters). The lighthouse's distinctive shape and sturdy construction have withstood numerous storms and harsh weather conditions over the years.

Light Characteristics

The Bass River Light emits a powerful beam that can be seen for up to 20 nautical miles. The light is characterized by a three-segmented pattern, consisting of two red lights and one white light, which serves as a warning system for mariners approaching the harbor.
