Location and Accessibility

The Egg Rock Light Station is situated on Egg Rock Island, located off the coast of Mount Desert Island in Maine, United States.

The island can be accessed by boat or kayak from nearby Bar Harbor.

History

The Egg Rock Lighthouse was built in 1875 to serve as a navigational aid for mariners approaching the busy shipping lanes of the Gulf of Maine.

Its strategic location helps guide vessels safely into the harbor and prevents collisions with the numerous rocky outcroppings surrounding Mount Desert Island.

Architecture

The lighthouse stands at an impressive height of 65 feet (20 meters) above sea level, while its focal height reaches 115 feet (35 meters).

The tower is constructed from granite and features a distinctive octagonal shape.

The light source is reportedly equipped with a first-order Fresnel lens, which projects a beam of light approximately 19 nautical miles into the surrounding waters.

Current Status

The Egg Rock Light Station remains an active aid to navigation, although it has been automated since its installation in 1875.

The lighthouse continues to play a vital role in guiding mariners safely into the harbor.
