The Front Range Light is a historic lighthouse located on the Merrimack River in Newburyport, Massachusetts.
History
- Built in 1873, the Front Range Light was one of two range lights constructed to aid navigation into Newburyport's harbor. The light was originally situated at Bayley's Wharf and played a critical role in guiding mariners safely into the harbor.
- In 1964, the light was relocated to its current site on the grounds of the Merrimack River Coast Guard Station.
Architecture
The Front Range Light is a wooden lighthouse with a distinctive tower height of approximately 50 feet (15 meters). The focal height, which is the distance from the base of the lens to the tip of the light, is around 100 feet (30 meters) above sea level. The light's architectural style is characteristic of late 19th-century lighthouses.
