The Kilauea Lighthouse is a 36-foot (11 meters) tall, square-based tower with a distinctive red-and-white striped exterior. The lighthouse's foundation is built on a rocky outcropping, providing stability against strong winds and sea conditions. The structure is constructed from reinforced concrete and features a cast-iron Fresnel lens.

Light Characteristics

The Kilauea Lighthouse emits a fixed white light, visible for 21 miles (34 kilometers) at night. Its pattern is a steady flash every three seconds.

Current Status

The lighthouse remains an active aid to navigation, although it has been automated since its decommissioning in the late 1990s. Today, it serves as a museum and educational center, operated by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.

Heritage Status

Designated as a National Historic Landmark (NHL) on October 18, 1979, the Kilauea Lighthouse is also listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP). It has been recognized for its architectural significance and historical importance in the maritime history of Hawaii.
