McGulpin Point Lighthouse

The McGulpin Point Lighthouse was constructed as a navigational aid through the Straits of Mackinac and began operation in 1869, making it one of the oldest surviving lighthouses in the Straits.

History

  • The lighthouse stands at a height of approximately 32 meters (105 feet) above sea level. Its focal height is believed to be around 48 meters (157 feet). The tower's design and construction materials are not specified, but it is reported to have been built using traditional lighthouse architecture.

The McGulpin Point Lighthouse emits a characteristic pattern of red and white flashes every 10 seconds. Its range is reportedly visible for up to 20 nautical miles (37 kilometers) out to sea.

Light Characteristics

The lighthouse has been automated since its decommissioning in 1906, although it was briefly reactivated as an official Aid to Navigation on the NOAA chart map in 2009. Today, it is operated by Emmet County and open to the public for guided tours.

Current Status

The McGulpin Point Lighthouse is located at Headlands Road, approximately 3 miles (4.8 kilometers) west of Fort Michilimackinac, in Mackinaw City, United States. Visitors can access the lighthouse via a short walk from the parking area.

Location and Accessibility

The McGulpin Point Lighthouse has been recognized for its historical significance and is listed as part of the National Register of Historic Places.

Heritage Status

The McGulpin Point Lighthouse played an important role in maritime navigation through the Straits of Mackinac, particularly during the 19th century. Its operation was briefly suspended during World War I due to concerns about potential German U-boat activity in the area.
